8 DECEMBER 2005 - At last, an uneventful day!
Today we needed to cover some miles. All together we were doing a reasonable daily average, but as this was meant to be the fast, straight, good road section – we could be doing better! Today we were aiming to storm south to Puerto Madryn and hopefully see some of the marine wildlife. Perhaps the odd mermaid…
The open road felt good again, the cars singing their different tunes as the straight tarmac fled behind us and the wind blasted us (poetic or pathetic eh!?). The sea finally came in sight and we headed into San Antonio Oeste for a closer look at the Southern Atlantic. We stopped, peeled off the layers and went to investigate. The town looked pretty Mediterranean, but the climate certainly wasn’t. Jackets still on we tried the water, freezing! Only Alan who is used to swimming in the North Sea seriously considered a swim. We spent a while on the sand, looking at the sea before heading back to the cars. A regional holiday was taking place, we never found out what it was in aid of, and we criss-crossed the streets trying to get out.

Lunch was a short while later at a roadside stop. Good food, beef, salad and chips. We all started to crave something different.
Apart from the Westland, and Ivor’s 100/4 running out of petrol, and the Hulux towing me the last few miles to the petrol station (not quite enough spare petrol cans) whilst it was spluttering near empty – nothing unplanned happened (no that is not a breakdown as it all took much less than an hour!).
We reached Puerto Madryn about 4.30 and immediately set about contacting Dr Guillermo Schmidt, a friend of Senior Lopez, a friend of Miguel Goldschmidt. Guillermo came to the hotel and gave us excellent advice on what to do and what to see over the next few days. But prior to Guillermo coming over we all rushed out to eat something we hadn’t eaten for some time – a Pizza!
The plan is…. Well wait and see.
