 Progress log and blog report

5 DECEMBER 2005

8am breakfast. The hotel was average and pricy for Argentina - £100/double room/night and by 10am we had gone to the offices of our customs agent Francisco. We then all headed to the docks for the big moment. Collecting the cars. There was still mixed opinion whether we would actually get the cars out today or not. We were determined to give it our best.

After an hour of waiting in an old industrial shed we were guided into the docks, given a hard hat each and an orange jacket and taken to the cars. There they were, our old friends, plucked from a UK winter and transported thousands of miles into the summer of another hemisphere. Sure they were dusty, but they started, they drove and we moved them out to customs. It looked like we would be away by lunch time. Fantastic!

After 2 hours of waiting, standing by our cars we decided to check them over a bit more. Ivor found an exhaust mounting had broken on his, so he had an enjoyable hour playing…… The air occasionally turned blue.

Having-fun

After another 2 hours of waiting we needed to get food to Julian due to his diabetes. So we commandeered a bus to take us to the works canteen. For a much needed coke and sandwich. All this time Chris, Alan and Julian’s friends were waiting outside the dock. The odd phone call kept us in touch.

Birthday-bash

It was my something more than 21 Birthday (not nearly as much as Torsten said – thank you) today and I had a wonderful phonecall from Sue, Charlotte and Lizzie who were having a week in Cairo. That lifted my spirits!

By 5.30, rush hour, we were finally processed and drove to the gates. And through the gates. And were promptly stopped by the police. Lots of had waving and stern looking faces. Our clearance agent who came with us unfortunately couldn’t speak any English, but his face told all. Luckily Julian caught a word which sounded like ‘insurance’ and yes that was it. Luckily we had arranged local insurance, so with the papers inspected we were actually off!

Open-road-at-last

Almost out of fuel (you are not allowed to have much fuel in your tank in the ship) we navigated through BA in the rush hour following Julian’s friends in their modern people carrier and onto the dual carriageway. A re-fuel and then we got out of there!

By 8.30 we had travelled nearly 150 miles and came into a little town of Delores and asked a man on a bike where to stay. He led us to a beautiful little hotel, where for £7/each night we had an excellent room. No food though – so off we went and found a local restaurant who were busy barbecuing pork, lamb and cow. Nine of us, loads of beer, chips and food £40. A good evening and what a Birthday, the start of an adventure.
